@ChevyChevelleSS political structure--is the worst (just below democracy). If he so vehemently opposed tyranny it seems odd to accuse him so blatantly of being THE precursor to it. But of course, I'm open to correction--Plato is one of my favorite philosophers for other reasons. I'll never forget my professor (a Plato and Rousseau scholar) defending Plato in class nonstop!

@Hapafull Haha good one...oh wait. Just what I like to do, argue over the internet. You have good points of course, but when I read Plato's work, I don't think you are correct. The Justice in 'Republic' for the common man who cannot get squelched under the tyrant, the 'Form of the Good' in which the philosopher-king knows Good. Excellent stuff. You have to remember that Plato lived under The Thirty Tyrants and his writing reflects this. He opposed tyranny. The tyrannical man--and tyranny as a

-these despots i disagree as i would compare it to medieval times when royalty told there followers they followed the word of christ and god when in many occasion they commited adultery ,murder, were greedy , unmerciful to the poor and to there enemies in war, so would it be fair to say that because they claimed to follow these rules of god, they did?, or if they didnt and men knew of there foul deeds that they would place blame on the bible because the king had claim to be inspired by it?
By: XXGDUBSXX. on 25 Jul 10, 08:13:55
@Hapafull leaders, platos idea of a philospher king where the wise rule, and this I believe is where the concept of o f him inspiring tyranny comes from but the philosopher king serves justly and Socrates said justice is the interest of the weak( again by weak i mean the common man, worker, soldier etc. not physically weak) So it would be the leaders duty to serve his people but tyrannies only serve themselves and aristocracies there immediate friends and relatives so when you say he influences -

@Hapafull men (or women) to lead us through travel, famine, war, times of wealth and golden ages but then you have generally two kinds of men that lead, Men who want to lead( for fame, power, women and wealth) and men who believe they must for fear (not in a terms of cowardice but in a context of they believe he is an unjust man) of having someon worse than them lead and of the latter it would be preferable to have a man with an open mind a man of reoson and of wisdom who would make the best -

@Hapafull -e sense of what is written in the "Republic" as man must eat so there must be people that hunt or gather food, man gets sick so there must be doctors, and men have souls so there must be a scholars devoted to such matters. Can any man do these things? For the most part yes bet when a man has a specific task he becomes better and more sophistocated with it making him a better doctor etc. Also our biology as apes demands us to look for leadership and guidance and this is where we need-

@Hapafull Your interpretation of the way Plato lived made me believe that you believed he was living an unjust life, a hyprocrite that criticises a system that benefits himself( feel free correct me if that is not what you meant). Yes i see that men are shown by plato to be servents of the society and i also agree that the idea of society is a concept and not a thing to be served but i believe if he talks of these men serving the state he means it in the way of he serve's his fellow men in th-

cont. Also, keep in mind that I'm not some Aristotle proponent who wants to bash Plato. Aristotle was far from an individual rights activist, and supported the aristocracy as a member. Also, I respect Plato and Aristotle immensely. Their contributions to philosophy and science are invaluable. It's just a shame that they lived in a matrix of oligarchies and despots. Living in a bubble tends to skew logical consistency and they often followed bias and prejudice in matters of politics.
By: Hapafull. on 25 Jul 10, 03:37:11
cont. Which begs the question: how can someone be a servant to something that is immaterial and has no will? The State will decide the will, and with 'wise men' (philosopher-kings) to decide what is good for the ignorant lower classes. What is ?good? for society will become the ethical standard, which at this point in development "society" is simply a surrogate for "State". It's ideas like these that I view as Statist and elitist to the core.
By: Hapafull. on 25 Jul 10, 03:27:37
cont. Keeping this in mind, we can now view society as an abstract concept, an aggregate notion of human interaction, and when this is the accepted view the individual is recognized as the fundamental unit. This definition may seem obvious, but you?d be surprised how often biases and prejudices can lead people to defy it; and what follows is the establishment of society as the fundamental unit. The individual is no longer viewed as the unit, but rather its servile agent.
By: Hapafull. on 25 Jul 10, 03:23:38
Nowhere did I say that he inspires men to commit evil acts. I said he was the spiritual antecedent, which metaphorically means that he shares with despots a similar set of premises that tries to justify Statism. To give one example; the idea that a "society" is something real and tangible. "Society" is not a concrete object. One doesn?t go to a party and see the group of people there as a single physical form, they simply see individual people mingling. cont.

@Hapafull So are you claiming that tyrannies, despots, and imperialist did not exist until after platos work was written? I could also blame the crime of murder on the gun but the sword and stone have taken many lives before that. But even that would only be similiar if plato indeed does inspire men to evil which i believe he does not.

A man's moral pontifications are often in contradiction with his actual conduct and lifestyle. Plato was a member of the privileged citizenry of the polis, the ultra-elite minority (aristocracy), who scorned trade and labor as ignoble, all the while living off of the product of slaves and commercial taxes. One of the reasons for supporting this hierarchical system was because it afforded him the leisure time to pursue his interests. He lived a life of self-gratification and pleasure (hedonist).
By: ChevyChevelleSS. on 23 Jul 10, 07:43:39
@Hapafull What a crock! Keep drinking that Leo Strauss cool-aid. I took as my senior seminar in philosophy Plato's 'Republic.' Wonderful book! Down with all your prior statements! Allow me to quote G.K Chesterton, whom one could denote as a Platonist..."I may, it is true, twist orthodoxy so as to partly justify a tyrant. But I can easily make up a German philosophy to justify him entirely." A hedonist? Have you ever read Republic? Gorgias?
By: Hapafull. on 03 Jul 10, 06:48:49
Plato: the spiritual antecedent of all future tyrants Plato's philosophy: the metaphysical adumbration for future tyrannies Plato's Republic: the schematic for future despotic states Plato was an elitist, a statist, a collectivist, a chauvinist, a hedonist, an imperialist. The prototype of human misery incarnate.
